چکیده
t a h a a ( p c H u e c D n c o c b d a Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease is the most common congenital cardiac anomaly, with a prevalence in the general population between 0.5% and 2% (1). There is significant cardiac morbidity associated with BAV disease, predominantly due to progressive valve dysfunction (stenosis or regurgitation) that requires surgical intervention for symptom relief or prevention of left ventricular dysfunction, or less commonly, for complications of endocarditis (2,3). We now understand that BAV disease is more than simply having 2, instead of 3, aortic valve leaflets. BAV disease encompasses a spectrum of phenotypic manifestations that not only includes valve dysfunction, but also abnormalities of the ascending aorta. Less common cardiovascular abnormalities may also occur, such as aortic coarctation, atrial septal defects, and ventricular septal defects.

Bicuspid Aortic Valve: An Unusual Cause of Aneurysm of Left Coronary Sinus of Valsalva
Bicuspid aortic valve is traditionally considered an innocuous congenital anomaly. Due to a better and widespread availability of non-invasive imaging techniques, it has come to the fore that 30% of these cases develop complications, viz., valve abnormality (aortic regurgitation and stenosis), and aneurysm of aortic root and ascending aorta. Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is an uncommon complicatio...

متن کاملBicuspid aortic valve aortopathy: genetics, pathophysiology and medical therapy.
The association between ascending aortic aneurysm (AA) and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) has been well established. Different genetic, haemodynamic and cardiovascular risk factors have been implicated in the development and progression of AA. However, to date, definite conclusions cannot be drawn regarding the exact molecular, cellular and haemodynamic mechanisms causing BAV-associated aortopathy...
متن کاملEvolution of Precision Medicine and Surgical Strategies for Bicuspid Aortic Valve-Associated Aortopathy
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital cardiac malformation affecting 1-2% of people. BAV results from fusion of two adjacent aortic valve cusps, and is associated with dilatation of the aorta, known as bicuspid valve associated aortopathy. Bicuspid valve aortopathy is progressive and associated with catastrophic clinical events, such as aortic dissection and rupture. Therefore, fre...

Background Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is known to be heritable and often shows a concomitant aortopathy which was thought also to be present in some family members. While one recent study reported normal ascending aortic diameters in family members of the general BAV population, little is known about aortic function in such family members. We used advanced aortic cardiovascular magnetic resona...
